Rupert Hartley

Rupert Hartley is a visual artist living and working in Hove, East Sussex. Trained originally in printed textile design at the Glasgow School of Art his work has evolved through various media and contexts to his current painting practice. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally with recent exhibitions including; A Hand Stuffed Mattress at The Terrace Gallery, London This Year’s Model at Studio 1.1, London and Wells Art Contemporary, Somerset. He is a lecturer at the University of the Arts London.

‘My paintings use formal geometries as a starting point to explore colour and the painting process. Working in series I build up layered compositions that explore and question the familiar archetypes of formalist painting such as the stripe, the grid and the cross with the aim of re examining these approaches through repetition of a painting process. In addition to this my recent paintings use cardboard as a surface to paint on, a surface I reconfigure and reconstruct through various cutting and intercuttings of elements. In these latest works I have also started referencing the surrounding environments to my studio in Hove, using the industrial and municipal spaces of this area of the south coast as starting points for new paintings.’
