This London hair salon is one with a difference as when getting a haircut, DKUK clients get to peruse art instead of gazing at their reflection in the mirror. It’s also a forward-thinking, gender neutral studio and this is reflected in pricing.

Hairdresser Daniel Kelly worked at Toni & Guy before training as an artist and, at DKUK, managed to fuse both passions. Artworks line the walls, taking in in everything from video installs, to multimedia imagery and fashion and style. This cutting-edge venture has successfully managed to combine the two practices in an informal and unique environment.

At just 2x5m, DKUK might be London’s smallest gallery and architects Sam Jacob Studio – clients include the Design Museum, the Science Museum and V&A – worked on a 2017 refit. Strips of mirror have been applied to slatted walls and vibrant yellow shelves and matching furniture offered the hybrid space more room for art installations.

Based in Peckham since 2014, DKUK offers haircuts and a range of colour services by highly trained, experienced stylists and, in 2017, it was selected for the L’Oreal Colour Trophy regional London trophy. They also work with vegan haircare range Pureology, styling products from the carbon neutral Davines and award-winning Philip Kingsley trichology range.

With funding support from the Arts Council England. DKUK offers artists a gallery for showing and developing work, away from the pressure of the commercial art world and the growing complexities of ‘publicly’ funded spaces.
