Michiyo Hayes Kuramochi used to be a US vintage buyer in Shimokitazawa; the vintage clothes “Mecca” in Tokyo, Japan. She would see many garments which weren’t in good enough condition to sell at her store but were still great as materials or alterable to something else.

After moving to the USA, she studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NY and later at ArtEZ, Arnhem, Holland. Her biggest interest became using the damaged, dead-stock, industrial left-over, roll-ends, vintage and second-hand materials, including kimono fabrics and suiting wools, with a handmade, craft-like approach and tailoring techniques to create new designs with a political twist and sub-cultural influence. She calls them “MOSTLY HARMLESS KREATIONS” and they are the base of her brand MHK3000. She takes many hours to create one piece of the garment because of her antithesis to modern mass-manufactured fast fashion. You will see how different it is from mainstream clothing and high street fashion. What she makes is a wearable piece of art.
