We're very excited to announce our Winter Open Studios 2024 hosted in the Bussey Building. This is your chance to discover one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts handmade in the heart of Peckham.

Coinciding with legendary Peckham Christmas market Pexmas, the studios will be open 11am - 5pm across Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th December.

Mark Pearson
Painting (Studio A4K)

Mark’s work is strong contemporary figurative painting; the key elements in his pictures are light, space and movement. His current subject is predominantly the ever-changing London skyline, focusing on Peckham where he has lived for over 30 years. His paintings encapsulate the evolution of a London neighbourhood, where he documents people interacting with each other in the streets, cafes and bars.

Mark’s paintings start from simple observations he makes walking through the area, repeating this and noting subtle changes. He records his ideas in small sketches and photographs. The initial sketch will be worked up to a large tonal drawing and this enables the main painting to start with a strong structure. The subject is introduced in a layered form working from the background to the foreground. Then details and colours are introduced. This process is repeated, elements being taken out and added until it is completed.

John Riordan

John is an illustrator and comics artist, combining hand-drawn and digital techniques. He is currently writing and drawing LOS, a graphic novel about William Blake, with whom he is a little bit obsessed. He wrote and drew ‘Music’s Cult Artists’ and won an Association of Illustrators award for his project ‘Capital City’. He co-created the psychedelic, musical comic book ‘Hitsville UK’ and he wrote and drew ‘William Blake, Taxi Driver’ for Time Out magazine.

Amy Binns

Born and raised in South London, Amy is an independent, self-taught artist, working mainly in acrylic paint on canvas.

Amy’s work is centred around contrast – the good in the bad and the bad in the good. Influenced by consumerism, popular culture and everyday life, Amy’s paintings are often bright, bold and graphic in style. By juxtaposing upbeat visuals with dark themes, Amy finds humour and irony in the mundane.

Amy is not limited to painting and has produced multiple videos, short stories and mixed media works. Amy is a tenacious, visual thinker with unique ideas.

Taya Fraser / Laya The Table

Taya is an image maker focussing on print and paint, making colourful and playful decorations for the self and the home. She does a mixture of screen printing techniques and oil painting, always using sustainable materials and ethical production processes. She’ll be selling 100% natural linen napkins and tablecloths, paintings and prints for the home as well as some bamboo silk fashion accessories like headbands and bows.

Willow Williams

Willow is a Peckham based ceramicist making functional and decorative wheel thrown and hand built tableware. Working predominantly in stoneware, her pieces are glazed using her own glaze recipes, with a focus on simplicity of form and colour. Her studio in the Bussey Building will be open to see her latest work, including a range of homeware, ideal for Christmas presents.

Jess Bird

Jess is a writer and illustrator from London – splitting her time between books, existential memes and advertising. She is interested specifically in the experience of being a woman – something she explores across all mediums. She also explores horror, existentialism and the occult in her written and visual work.

Just Trade

Just Trade is a well respected jewellery and accessories brand built around the interests of the people who make their products. Working in collaboration with makers in Peru, Ecuador, India, Vietnam and Indonesia, they believe in a system of trade that prioritises producers, communities and the environment. At the beginning of this year, they became Guaranteed Members of the World Fair Trade Organization.

They will be back at the Winter Open Studios with another fantastic sample sale. This is a great opportunity to get ready for Christmas without breaking the bank – there are plenty of bargains to be had with prices starting at just £5.

Ines Fernandez de Cordova
Printmaking (Studio A4L)

Ines is interested in the relationship between objects and time and the manner in which we perceive the two. Fernandez uses her sculptures as tools to create still-lives, constructing subtle narratives through the use of sequence, mark making, layering and mirroring. Her work is cyclical in the sense that it continuously loops from 2D into 3D. By creating uncanny scenes with her sculptures, she aims to invite the viewer to analyse the relationships between them. Printmaking plays a fundamental role in her practice and through the use of photography the artist has managed to cohesively merge her primary interests in sculpture and printmaking.

Grizelda Kitching

Grizelda Kitching is an artist and printmaker from Peckham, South East London.

Grizelda’s practice primarily involves paper-based, process-led, printmaking. Typically using photography to capture images as a starting point, then developing a response to the original imagery through colour and mark-making. The development continues resulting in abstract, spontaneous pieces through the use of mono-screenprint.
